Do I Need a Stinger Suit on A whitsundays Bareboat Charter

by Alan Milso

Preface

As a bareboat charter operator in the Whitsundays one of the most common questions I am asked is “what about jellyfish” There are 2 types of jellyfish which drawn particular attention in this are one is the Box Jelly fish (Chironex fleckeri) and the Irukandji jellyfish (Carukia barnesi). Both jellyfish have been recorded to have caused death with the Box

Time of Year

Studies have shown that October through to March have record the most sting peaking in January. This author could not find any studies that related the stings to the number of tourist which I believe would be an interesting fact.

Signs Of Being Stung

The intriguing part about the Irukandji sting is that it usually goes unnoticed until about half an hour later when the symptom start to manifest themselves. These include increased heart rate, vomiting, sweating, chest pains and a feeling anticipated fear. The symptoms ebb to return up to half an hour later and the cycle continues progressively getting worse.

Dealing with A Sting

Applying vinegar to the area which has been stung will remove any other tentacles an prevent further invenonmation. Bareboat Charterer should also immediately contact the charter company to arrange the next step which is usually an airlift to Mackay where the victim is kept under observation

Reducing Risk

Good Bareboat companies in the Whitsundays will have, or make available for hire, “Stinger Suites” these are extremely light weight and comfortable wet suits. They are adequate protection from any jellyfish and great for the prevention of sunburn. Irukandji are extremely delicate which is why they are hard to study in captivity, colliding into the glass of a fish tank is enough to kill them.

Finally

Chances of being stung by an Irukandji bareboating in the Whitsunday Island, I think, are quite remote and as they say you’re more likely to suffer worse injury in a crash on the way to your way. Having said that, when my most treasured possessions go for a snorkel they put on the stinger suit for added security and that would be my suggestion for you to best enjoy the beautiful whitsundays on a bareboat charter.
